"Training a Dog to Poop
in One Area of the Yard"

Training a dog to poop in one area of a yard is a priority for many dog owners, especially if they have small yards and don’t want all the grass destroyed in their yards.

Few owners want poop droppings all over their backyard. The best way to begin fixing this problem is to feed your do a balanced diet on a fixed schedule.

Once your dog is on a fixed schedule, you can gauge when he needs to relieve himself. For the first several times, take him outside to a specific spot in your yard so that he can relieve himself. When he relieves himself in that spot, occasionally give him a treat so that he associates eliminating in that spot with something good. Only do this occasionally because you don’t want him to think that every time he poops or pees he’s going to get a treat.

When you take your dog out to poop, make sure that you don’t make the poop time like a play or walk time. Be purposeful. Walk to the designated pooping spot and wait until your dog eliminates.

After your dog has pooped in the designated spot, don’t immediately rush inside. If you rush inside, your dog will just learn to hold onto his poop for as long as possible to have more outdoor time, especially if it’s nice outside. After the poop, praise your dog and then wait a few minutes before going back inside.

Eventually your dog will get into a pattern of relieving himself in the one spot you’ve set out for him. Another way to train your dog to poop in one area of the yard is to use pet friendly repellants. One such repellant is Repel Away by Farnam. It’s a large bottle of gel crystals with scents that dogs don’t like. It works in rain or shine and does not destroy vegetation. It usually costs less than $10 per pint.

If your dog does poop in a non-designated area, call his attention to it. Rebuke him for what he did wrong, but only immediately or shortly after he poops in the wrong area. If you wait hours after the incident, the dog will not know why you’re so mad at him. His memory isn’t that good, and he’ll be unable to make the connection.

After a pooping accident, remove every last trace of the poop and scrub the area the best that you can to remove the poop smell. Two vet-recommended odor neutralizers and removers are Nature’s Miracle Stain and Odor Remover and Un-Duz-It.

Never beat or hit a dog for pooping in the wrong spot. Telling him off firmly should do the trick.

Training your dog to poop in one area of the yard is a time-consuming task. Don’t expect results overnight.
