School for Dog Trainer

There are plenty of schools for dog trainers in North America that offer full-time programs or seminars and workshops on dog training. The best dog trainers take advantage of these opportunities to increase their dog training knowledge because doing so makes them better trainers who are more likely to get a larger clientele.

The American Dog Trainers recommends attending at least two dozen one-to-four day workshops and seminars held at schools for dog trainers. Some of the subjects suggested by the organization include:

·  The History and Development of Breeds

·  How To Choose & Raise A Puppy; Developmental Stages

·  Housetraining & Crate Training

·  Puppy Training & Pet Dog Training

·  Competition Obedience Training (all levels)

Some dog training education requires attending a specialized school for dog trainers that teaches dog training and nothing but. However, there are also several university that also teach animal behavior programs in addition to their other programs. These universities include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Cornell University in Ithica, NY
  • Guelph University in Ontario, Canada
  • Tufts University in Boston, MA

Those looking to become dog trainers should also make sure that they read everything they can about the subject. While it’s good to receive group training at schools for dog trainers, dog trainers or prospective dog trainers need to take the initiative and do some self-learning.

Books you might consider reading are:

  • The Puppy Primer by Brenda Scidmore and Patricia McConnell, Ph.D.
  • Dog Training: The Gentle Modern Method by David Weston
  • Paw-sitive Dog Training by Allan Bauman
  • Canine and Feline Behavioral Therapy by Benjamin and Lynette Hart
  • Excel-erated Learning by Pamela J. Reid, Ph.D.

Also be sure to read the dog magazines like Dog Fancy, Dogs in Canada, Dog World, and Dog Sports Magazine.
