Training Tips for
German Shepherd Breed
German Shepherds are
highly intelligent dogs so it can often be very easy to train them if
the proper techniques are used. If you’re a German Shepherd owner,
this article will provide you with useful free training tips for the
German Shepherd breed.
The first, and
perhaps most important, free training tip for the German Shepherd Breed
that we can give you is that you need to teach your German Shepherd to
respect you. Once your dog respects you, he will listen to you and his
manners will improve.
All dogs are
socially conditioned in a pack order. Their instincts make them most
respective to a ladder of hierarchy. They need to be lead otherwise they
will loose respect for you and try to be the leader themselves. When
German Shepherds try to show their superiority, they may do it in subtle
ways like barking at you (telling you off) when you order them to do
something. Or they might show their superiority by doing something
seemingly endearing like nudging you for attention when you’re busy
doing something else.
Before beginning any
type of German Shepherd training, you need to establish who is the boss.
You need to establish a pecking order. You need to prove that you are
the dominant one and the one who makes all the rules and decisions. Your
German Shepherd needs to realize that what you say goes.
The tendency of many
owners of the German Shepherd breed is to be friends with their dogs.
While this may sound harsh,
your dog is not looking for a buddy-buddy relationship. He
needs someone to tell and show him where his place is in this world. He
needs to know precisely where he stands. He wants this because knowing
what his role is will make him feel secure.
Once a German
Shepherd knows his role, he won’t resist it. This is because he
instinctively knows the well being of the pack (in your case, the family
regardless of size) depends on each member knowing and fulfilling his or
her respective roles.
So of all the free
training tips for the German Shepherd breed available to you, remember
that the most important one is to earn and establish respect from your
dog. You don’t need to do much. And you definitely don’t need to be
cruel and inhumane. Simply teach your dog that what you say goes. You
are the boss. He is the follower.
Educate your German
Shepherd. Teach him the meanings of lots of words. Spend time with him,
and admonish him when he does anything disrespectful.
